Understanding Rise and Waist
Low-rise sits below the hip bone, mid-rise at the navel, and high-rise above. Most Asian factories default to mid-rise, which works for the majority of body types. Always check the front and back rise measurements separately.
The front rise affects how pants sit at your stomach. A 25cm front rise is low, 28cm is mid, and 31cm+ is high. The back rise determines whether you get the dreaded "plumber's crack" when bending over. Good pants have a back rise at least 3cm longer than the front rise.
For athletic builds with larger thighs, mid-rise is the safest bet. It provides enough room without sitting too low. For taller torsos, high-rise pants create better proportions by elongating the legs visually.
Inseam and Break
Inseam is the inner leg length from crotch to hem. Break refers to how much fabric rests on your shoe. No break shows the ankle, slight break creates one small fold, and full break creates multiple folds. Slim-fit pants look best with slight or no break.
To measure your inseam at home, stand straight and measure from your inner crotch seam to the floor. Then subtract your preferred break amount: 0cm for no break, 1-2cm for slight break, and 3cm+ for full break.
Most factory pants come in standard inseams: 76cm (30"), 81cm (32"), and 86cm (34"). If your ideal inseam falls between sizes, choose the longer option and have them hemmed locally. It is always easier to shorten than lengthen.
Taper and Leg Opening
Taper describes how much the leg narrows from knee to ankle. A strong taper goes from 40cm at the knee to 28cm at the ankle. A moderate taper goes from 40cm to 32cm. Straight leg maintains the same width from knee to ankle.
Your body type determines the best taper. Slim builds can wear strong tapers without looking top-heavy. Athletic and muscular builds benefit from moderate tapers that balance the upper and lower body. Straight leg works for everyone but looks most natural on broader frames.
Leg opening width should complement your shoe choice. Wide openings (36cm+) pair well with chunky sneakers and boots. Narrow openings (28-30cm) work with slim sneakers and loafers. The wrong combination makes either the pants or shoes look disproportionate.
Shorts Length Rules
5-inch inseams are trendy and show maximum leg. They work best on fit builds and in casual summer settings. 7-inch is the versatile standard that flatters most body types and works in both casual and semi-casual contexts.
9-inch is conservative and works for most casual settings. It sits just above the knee on average-height men. Above-the-knee is universally flattering unless you have very long legs, in which case 7-inch may look short.
Shorts rise matters too. Mid-rise shorts (27-29cm front rise) are the most comfortable for all-day wear. High-rise shorts can look dated unless styled intentionally.
Fabric Choices for Pants and Shorts
Cotton chino is the all-rounder. It is breathable, structured, and accepts dye well. Stretch cotton adds 2-5% elastane for comfort during movement. Our agents prefer 97/3 cotton-elastane blends for daily wear.
Denim weight is measured in ounces per square yard. 10-12oz is lightweight and comfortable. 13-14oz is the standard for raw denim. Above 15oz is heavyweight and takes months to break in but lasts for years.
Linen and linen-blend pants are summer essentials. They breathe better than cotton but wrinkle easily. A 55/45 linen-cotton blend offers the best of both worlds — breathability with reduced wrinkling.

Asian Sizing Adjustments
Pants from Asian factories run one to two sizes smaller than Western equivalents. A Chinese "Large" often equals a US "Medium" or even "Small" in the waist. Always check the size chart and measure your actual waist rather than relying on size labels.
Hip measurements are critical for pants. Asian factory pants often have narrower hip-to-waist ratios. If you have wider hips relative to your waist, look for brands that offer "athletic fit" or check the hip measurement specifically.
